There’s something about October that makes this month feel like a climax in the grand song nature is singing. With a great burst of color every leafy thing pours its final breaths into a glorious feast for the eyes. Trees and vines offer us the last of their fruit. Bounty is everywhere. It’s a grand celebration of life as we gather up treasures for cooler, darker days.
As I’ve reflected on each month of the year, I realize how much more aware I am of all the little changes along the way. Hummingbirds no longer grace our feeders and we’ve switched out sugar water for suet so the woodpeckers will have a snack in the colder weather. Squirrels are feverishly stuffing their faces with nut and seed to bury when food is sparse. It’s a good time for gathering. Winter isn’t one of my favorite times, and I want to treasure up beauty and wonder and joy, gathering up my “harvest” to feast on in the months ahead.
