7 Methods for Displaying Rectangular Embroidery (Without Using a Round Hoop)

7 Methods for Displaying Rectangular Embroidery (Without Using a Round Hoop)

Do you ever get bored of hanging your embroidery projects in round hoops? Or have you ever stitched a rectangular embroidery pattern and didn’t like the way it looked when hung in a round hoop? The good news is there are lots of options for featuring your hand embroidery work that will add visual interest to your walls and variety to your home. Read on for a handful of ideas that will make your square or rectangular stitching projects look even more impressive!

Stretch It Over Canvas

Stretching finished stitching over canvas is one of my favorite ways to display hand embroidery because it looks great whether it’s hanging on the wall or sitting on a shelf. You can use an inexpensive canvas from a craft store and stretch your hand embroidery over it, or pick up stretcher bars for your project if you can’t find an existing canvas that’s the right size. Visit this article to learn the easiest and fastest way to display embroidery on stretched canvas.

Frame Your Embroidery

Framing embroidery offers a variety of ways to display your finished work, whether you take your stitching to a frame shop for a professional touch, or choose a DIY option. Framing dimensional embroidery and letting it spill over the edge of the frame is a fun way to highlight the texture of the stitches, or try a shadow box frame to keep your stitches from getting dusty or squished by glass.

Use a Square Hoop

If, after stitching, you really want the simplicity of displaying your hand embroidery in a hoop, try a square- or rectangular-shaped one. This autumn tree-lined path pattern uses a beautiful Hardwicke Manor 10x10” square frame, but DMC makes some great ones too! There are many varieties of rectangular hoops out there, constructed of wood or plastic, that will fit your budget.

Create a Mounted Wall Hanging

I often use acid-free, adhesive board to mount embroidery projects before framing it, but you can also leave the embroidery out of a frame and hang the rigid board on its own. Glue decorative elements, such as ribbon, rick rack, or twine, to the sides or back of the board to create a decorative wall hanging. Check out the tutorial for How to Use Adhesive Mounting Board to Display Your Embroidery Project.

Make It into a Square Pillow

Square or rectangular embroidery designs are perfect for decorating a throw pillow in your home. Even if you don’t have sewing skills, you can use some HeatnBond® Ultrahold tape to create a no-sew pillow with this tutorial. Just remember to take into consideration how much fabric you need to cut for your pillow before you transfer and stitch your pattern.

Feature It on a Tote Bag

Canvas tote bags have lots of real estate for displaying your stitching, and because of their shape, they are ideal for square or rectangular embroidery designs. Plus the canvas fabric is great for hand embroidery. Learn how to decorate a tote bag with hand embroidery in this article.

Hang It in a Tapestry Frame

Tapestry frames are another simple and elegant way to hang fiber art, whether it’s stitched, sewn, quilted or just a really cool fabric print that you like. Shops like Hanger Frames™ on Etsy offer a variety of frame sizes, finishes, and hanging hardware so you can customize the look you want. Add decorative fabric elements to your finished embroidery and create a beautiful tapestry framed wall hanging with this straightforward tutorial.
